in 1984 Ronald Reagan sanctioned the F.C.C's amendment of child orientated advertising. From this event two TV shows where born, Transformers, and G.I - J.O.E. These cartoons started the theme of co-branding between the toys and the cartoons that became the wants and desires of boys and girls across the united states, I was no different.
Recollection of my childhood memories are overpowered by my idealized concepts of these toys and cartoons that I worshiped and still inform my art work to this day.
upon reflecting, these memories begin to expose the truth of the matter, the toys where a shadow of the experience. I wanted to immerse my self in these cartoons that stimulated my imagination and created an almost rabid desire to attain these toys so that maybe I could hold on to that fleeting experience.
I now know that these toys are just petroleum products and are a cheap facsimile to the dreams that their cartoons were selling me. greed and feverish desire are the dark reality of what came from these products and all I have to show for it now are these broken toys and broken dreams. To the passer by reading this I ask you, "what is nostalgia?" and to the many nostalgic twenty somethings think about the value that we place upon these broken trinkets of our childhood.
