so the assignment was to respond to a painting (12"x12") and evolve from the idea. like a game of telephone. In a kind of leap frog action, the first was two dimensional, and the second is to have three dimensional elements to it so the one i had to respond to was a picture of a bird cage with arabesque pen and ink on a green panel.
my response was this this, I titled it "Don't cage things you don't understand."
process: I had to respond to it with the 3d elements so i incorporated wire, and these wood cut outs that I have been absolutely loving lately. For some inspirational stuff that has effected me with its awesomeness look at this guy,

yeah hes awesome, I had the opportunity to work with this fine gentleman at snowboard connection. good times.
I cut out these birds with a jig saw (not the most delicate of tools). and painted them and mounted it with glue. The wire was applied to the panel with a drill and then i punched the wire through the holes and painted them with speed ball ink. the heart in the cage is done on tag board with water color pencils. I also made a wire lock and key to try and tie the wood cut outs back into the original panel to kind of unify it. I got this assignment on Friday afternoon and I finished it from scratch at 2:30am Saturday a personal record for me.
dig it! shit looks rad, put up some detail photos of the birds yo!
ReplyDeleteyou cutting plywood? that shit is fragile.
I'm assuming you've looked at jeremy fish's work (if not google him now!) that's where i got the initial idea from. thanks for the creds though.
I like!
