soooo we have to pick an object and blow it up and scale it down. I think im going to do my sketch book because it can be replicated easily but it could take on different personalities in its different scales.
large scale: immensely epic and almost iconographic. a book has a very powerful ability to invoke a sense of authority and importance.
small scale. personal, intimate, delicate, introverted, reflective, special, sacred.
i think books to scale, even have a sense of presence in our world still with arrival and dominance of technology. More and more people do their reading on a screen more so than in the pages of a book or periodicals. They getting their news, networking, e-mail-ing, getting bank statements, receiving event invitations, and so forth through technology rather than in a news paper or magazine. these tangible documentations are in no way phased out. There is more of a importance on instantaneous access to information that a "printed" source can only hope to accomplish.
The image of a book or in this case a sketch book still to this day holds a feeling of reverence and and adoration for the common woman/man. childhood memories of stories like "the giving tree" or "James and the giant peach" (to pull from my childhood) are linked to or synonymous with books. and as an artist my sketch book is sacred to me because of its link to my past (artistically) and because it is a object that is intrinsic to my personality as an individual.
by scaling up this personal object i am making a introverted thing public and powerful.
by scaling down i will make it even more fragile and delicate that its true to scale self.
this is my mission statement/rational
this is davin signing off
my mission should i choose to accept it.
